Katherine Raines doesn't just belong in the automotive industry—she's proving she's one of its brightest rising stars. This Erie County Technical School student has faced down doubters, risen to the top of her class, and secured a dealership position while still in high school. Her response to being told she doesn't belong? Student of the Month, Emerging Leader award, National Technical Honor Society induction, and a sponsorship to technical college.

Motor Age is partnering with TechForce Foundation to share profiles and perspectives of student automotive technicians. These students were asked about their experience working while in school.

Katherine's path into automotive technology was driven by a clear purpose. "I have always had a passion for cars and trucks, and I wanted a career that allowed me to work with my hands, as well as use my critical thinking and problem-solving skills to diagnose and repair vehicles," she explains. That combination of hands-on work and intellectual challenge drew her to a field where both are essential every day.

But passion alone doesn't tell the full story. Katherine's journey has included obstacles that have nothing to do with her abilities. "Throughout my time in the trade, I have often been told that I don't belong because of my gender," she shares candidly. "Despite this, I worked my way to the top of the class and earned Student of the Month and the Emerging Leader award."

Her response to skepticism wasn't argument—it was achievement. The accolades continued: induction into the National Technical Honor Society, recognition as an emerging leader, and consistent performance that placed her at the head of her class. Then came the opportunity that would validate her approach: a position as a lube technician and apprentice at her local GMC dealership.

Katherine didn't wait for opportunities to find her. "I took the initiative to work during school to learn the trade, create a solid foundation for my career, and open up new opportunities after I graduate," she notes. That initiative paid off in ways that extend beyond a paycheck. Working at the dealership while still in technical school gave her exposure to professional shop operations, manufacturer standards, and the expectations of a high-volume service environment.

The benefits proved substantial. "Working during school has secured me a sponsorship to technical college and taught me so much about the industry and all of the possibilities in it," Katherine explains. That sponsorship represents more than financial support - it's recognition from a major manufacturer that she has the skills, work ethic, and potential they want to invest in.

Her ambitions don't stop with graduation. Katherine has mapped out a clear trajectory: "I intend to not only meet, but to exceed the expectations of my technical program and to continue my education in the General Motors ASEP program to ultimately become a World Class Technician." The GM ASEP (Automotive Service Educational Program) represents one of the industry's most rigorous training pathways, combining technical education with manufacturer-specific training and dealership experience.

The World Class Technician designation she's pursuing requires mastery of complex diagnostic systems, ongoing training, and demonstrated excellence. For someone still in high school to articulate that goal, and to already be taking concrete steps toward it, speaks to the kind of long-term thinking that builds successful careers.

Katherine's story illustrates an important truth: talent and determination matter more than outdated assumptions. The skills required for modern vehicle diagnostics - critical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail - have nothing to do with gender and everything to do with aptitude, interest, and work ethic.

Her experience demonstrates the value of integrated education. The classroom provides theory and systems knowledge. The dealership provides context, pace, and professional expectations. Together, they create competence that neither environment could build alone.

For young women considering automotive careers, Katherine's achievements offer evidence that excellence speaks louder than prejudice. She didn't ask permission to succeed - she earned recognition through performance. Her awards, sponsorship, and dealership position weren't given; they were achieved through skill, dedication, and drive. As Katherine moves toward her goal of becoming a World Class Technician, she's building more than a career - she's demonstrating what the next generation of automotive professionals looks like. They're driven by passion, equipped with both classroom knowledge and shop experience, and determined to let their work define them rather than others' expectations.

TechForce receives more than 12,000 applications from students with deep financial need each year. In 2025 alone, TechForce awarded more than $6 million in scholarships and grants. While this is an impressive sum of awards, it's still only awarding 1 in every 7 applicants. We need more donations to help more students obtain the technical training required to be workforce ready.
