Noisy Ford Transmission, Including F-150, Gets Service Kit

This bulletin applies to 2008-2010 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, F-150 and 2013-2014 E-150, E-250 and E-350 vehicles. A service kit has been released to assist with proper repair of the 4R75E transmission, where vehicles have exhibited a grinding, whine-type noise, vibration and/or gear slippage while driving, or a loss of reverse resulting from a planetary gear assembly failure.

Using a scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and record. The following DTCs may be present: P0733, P0720, P0722, P0731, P1783, P0732, P0734, P0721, P0297, P0781, P0782, P1728, P1715, P1744, P1783, P0741, P1741, P1742 and/or P1743.

Remove the transmission fluid pan. 

Inspect the pan for debris using a magnet. If debris is found, proceed to Step 4. If little or no metallic debris is present, or if blackened friction material is present, this bulletin does not apply.

Install the transmission oil pan and remove the transmission for disassembly. Determine if the transmission requires repair or replacement. If repair, proceed to Step 5. If replacement is needed proceed to Step 10.

Clean all internal components thoroughly. Replace any friction material that may have metal pieces embedded.

Disassemble and clean the main control valve body.

Assemble the transmission using the parts provided in the service kit (planetary upgrade kit AL3Z-7A398-C). 

Were DTCs P0741, P1741, P1742 or P1743 present? If no, proceed to Step 9. If yes, replace the torque converter and proceed to Step 10.

Place the torque converter assembly on the bench and drain the old fluid. Refill with fresh ATF and drain again. Repeat until clean oil is present when draining.

Perform transmission fluid cooler back-flushing and cleaning.

Finish transmission installation.
