GDI Engines Have Longer Cold Crank Times

General Motors notes that vehicles equipped with gasoline direct injection engines may have slightly longer cold crank times than that of port injection engines. This applies, for example, to 2016-on Camaro and Cadillac CTS/Escalade, 2014-on Corvette/Silverado/Suburban/Tahoe and GMC Yukon/Sierra equipped with 4.3L, 5.3L, 6.2L LV3, L83, L86, LT1/LT4 engines.

Direct injection systems run at higher pressures, and the mechanical pump on the engine must build up the required pressure before the first injection event occurs. Below are typical direct injection crank times on gasoline engines (start up coolant temperature crank time):

Above 50 degrees Fahrenheit...............up to 1.5 seconds

Between 50 deg F and 14 deg F........... up to 2.5 seconds

Between 14 deg F and -4 deg F........... up to 3.5 seconds

Between -4 deg F and -13 deg F.......... up to 5 seconds

Between -13 deg F and -22 deg F.........up to 7 seconds

Below -22 deg F, the recommendation is to perform an assisted start (such as a block heater)
