Kia recalls 250,500 K5 sedans over fuel tank melting risk
Kia has issued a safety recall for 250,500 K5 sedans across 2021-2024 model years due to a defective check valve on the fuel tank that can allow air intrusion, causing tank expansion. When the expanded tank contacts hot exhaust components, it can melt and leak fuel, increasing fire risk, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents and reported by SI Live.
K5 owners should watch for popping sounds from the fuel tank area, check engine light illumination, or rough running conditions. Kia will contact owners by mail starting Jan. 16, 2026, to schedule dealership service. Dealers will replace the check valve and inspect and replace any damaged fuel tanks at no cost.
Owners can verify recall eligibility by contacting Kia customer service at (800) 333-4542 or NHTSA's safety hotline at (888) 327-4236.
This recall is among several Kia has issued recently. In September, the automaker recalled 39,500 older SUVs for fire risk. In August, Kia recalled over 100,000 vehicles for loose exterior parts that could detach while driving, and separately recalled 201,000 Telluride SUVs for similar trim issues. Drivers were advised to watch for visually loose exterior trim and unusual rattling or wind noise.
