Trump signs "Buy American, Hire American" executive order at Snap-on Tools headquarters
President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling to prioritize buying American-made products over foreign, and to overhaul the worker visa program, which allows companies to hire immigrants.
The "Buy American, Hire American" order was signed at the Snap-on Tool headquarters in Kenosha, Wisconsin on April 18.
Essentially, the order is broken into two related policies: "Buy American" and "Hire American."
The "Buy American" plan calls for the government to focus on American-made goods, "in order to promote economic and national security and to help stimulate economic growth, create good jobs at decent wages, strengthen [America's] middle class, and support the American manufacturing and defense industrial bases..."
It also calls for the reduction in the number of waivers the government uses to trade with other countries.
The "Hire America" plan calls for an increase in wages and employment rates for worker in the U.S., as well as an overhaul of the current H-1B worker visa program in order to "create higher wages and employment rates for workers in the United States," according to the executive order.
The H-1B worker visa program will be changed from the current lottery system, which some officials say pulls down wages, to a merit-based system to ensure visas are awarded to the highest skilled applicants.
"We view his visit as an encouraging development in highlighting the essential nature of American manufacturing to our nation’s future," Snap-on Inc. CEO Nicholas Pinchuk said in a news release.
