Vehicle manufacturers have reported several safety recalls to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during the first full week of February. Technicians and shop owners should be aware of these potential safety hazards, ranging from unexpected door openings to engine fire risks.

Toyota Prius, Prius Prime: Rear doors opening unexpectedly

Toyota is recalling certain 2023-2026 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles due to a defect where water can enter the electronic rear door latches. If a short circuit occurs, the rear doors may unlatch and open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion or if the doors are unlocked, increasing the risk of injury or ejection.

The Fix: Toyota dealers will replace both right and left rear door opener switches with improved parts.

Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee: Rear coil spring detachment

FCA US, LLC (Chrysler) is recalling specific 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee L models. The rear coil springs may have been incorrectly installed during production or a previous service, potentially leading them to detach from the vehicle while driving. This can cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, reinstall or replace the rear coil spring assemblies.

Lamborghini Revuelto: Rearview camera failure

Automobili Lamborghini is recalling a small number of 2024-2025 Revuelto vehicles. The rearview camera image may fail to display when the vehicle is in reverse, failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

The Fix: Lamborghini will provide a software update for the infotainment system to ensure the camera feed remains stable.

Honda / Acura: Improperly tightened driver’s seat frames

American Honda Motor Co. is recalling certain 2023-2024 Acura Integra, Honda Accord, Accord Hybrid, HR-V, and Pilot vehicles. The driver’s seat frame may not have been tightened to the correct specifications during assembly. This could result in the seat failing to remain secure during a crash, failing FMVSS 207 requirements and increasing injury risk.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the seat frame bolts and tighten them to the proper torque or replace affected seat components as needed.

BMW and Toyota Supra: Starter motor fire risk

BMW of North America is recalling several models including the 2021-2024 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and the Toyota Supra (built by BMW). The starter motor can overheat due to repeated start attempts under certain conditions, potentially causing a fire in the engine compartment.

The Fix: BMW will update the vehicle software to prevent the starter from overheating. In some cases, the starter motor and associated wiring may be replaced.
