Bendix announces reduced stopping distance-certified 23K aftermarket friction

Bendix announces the BA232R brake lining, available in early October. Available from Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC (BSFB), BA232R linings are designed to handle 23K applications such as heavy line haul, heavy pick-up and delivery, severe duty, and refuse.

“Three years ago, we developed the industry’s first RSD-certified aftermarket friction, the BA202R, suitable for 20K applications, and it changed the aftermarket landscape,” said Keith McComsey, BSFB director of marketing and customer solutions. “With the BA232R, Bendix’s  aftermarket friction line now serves fleets that use heavier axle-weight trucks, so they can meet  the minimum RSD requirements as vehicles age.”

RSD regulations require most tractor combinations to stop within 250 feet. In testing, the BA232R provided an average 235-foot stopping distance – both exceeding the mandate and putting it in the same performance range as the BA202R. Because not all replacement friction marketed as acceptable under RSD will actually perform to the vehicle regulation – even if it has met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 121 dynamometer test – Bendix recommends that buyers ask for written confirmation from their supplier.

“The standards provide several methods for brake friction RSD certification, and Bendix conducts its testing using an actual truck on an actual track – not everyone does that,” McComsey said. “When you’re counting on a 23K brake lining to handle the workload that most  23,000-pound axles are tasked with day in and day out, the last thing you want to think about is  whether the friction you’ve selected is up to meeting real-world demands.”

BA232R linings will be available on both Bendix remanufactured brake shoes and Service New brake shoes.

BSFB, a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Products, LLC, produces the full lineup of commercially available Bendix brand foundation drum and air disc brake solutions at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in  Bowling Green, Kentucky.
