David Michael Pennington, a veteran trucking communications professional and a very involved member of the trucking industry, passed away from a heart attack on December 5, 2014, in Fernandina Beach, FL. A very proud native of Memphis, TN, he was 64.

Pennington, truly a prince of an individual, was one of those rare people who made everyone feel special and was always willing to help and offer his sage wisdom and guidance. His thoughtfulness was incredible, as he was always sending a little note, remembering one’s special occasions, passing along a book or article of interest or phoning just to say hello.

He was very involved in Trucker Buddy International (senior advisor), Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (communications counselor and volunteer), American Trucking Associations (vice chairman of the Communications & Image Policy Committee) and Truck Writers of North America (member of the board of directors).

Among the many causes he worked for were animal welfare, education, the environment and young people development.

Career

After graduating with a Journalism Degree from the University of Memphis, Pennington, a most talented communicator, went to work as a writer/editor/photographer for Insurance Careers magazine. A short time later, he became editor of Southern Motor Cargo magazine.

In 1985, he joined the automotive division of Rockwell Automotive, Troy, MI, as the manager of product publicity and business relations. He advanced through the ranks as the company became ArvinMeritor and the Meritor. When he retired from Meritor in 2010, he was senior director of global marketing communications and industry relations.

Pennington then founded PenNotes, a market-driven counsel service, Fernandina Beach, FL-based company that provides communications, counsel and writing/editorial services for the business-to-business commercial vehicle industry. His blog, "Serious about B2B Communications?” was well read by many throughout that industry.

He also was a writer and contributor to a number of publications, including: Tire Review, Fleet Equipment, Automotive Business, The Trucker and ReMaTec News.

Among Pennington’s numerous honors and awards: Truck Writers of North America (TWNA) Extra Mile Award; TWNA Communicator of The Year - 2006; Automotive Public Relations Council (APRC) Outstanding Communicator - 2006; TWNA Lifetime Achievement Award - 2008; and many writing and communications awards.

Pennington was a very dear friend to so many. He will be missed greatly

At the time of this writing, funeral arrangements had not been made.
