U.S. postpones tariffs on Mexico

Countries agree to security, trade talks, and negotiations to prevent tariffs.

As tariffs roll out from the United States onto neighboring Canada and Mexico, the Trump Administration has agreed to postpone the implementation of 25% tariffs on Mexican imports for one month following an agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

According to Supply Chain News, Mexico, in its part of the deal, will deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to combat drug trafficking, while the U.S. will work to prevent high-powered weapons from entering Mexico.

"Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade," Sheinbaum said in Spanish on social media platform X.

Negotiations between the countries will be led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. The talks follow Trump's weekend announcement to launch tariffs on Feb. 4.

On the other side, Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, some of which will also begin Feb. 4.
