Ryan Driscoll is marketing director at fleet management solution provider GPS Insight. He spoke to Aftermarket Business World about how fleet systems can affect vehicle operations.

What are the key features in a fleet solution that help improve vehicle maintenance?

Some of the key features a fleet solution should have in regards to vehicle maintenance are the ability to log all maintenance completed on each vehicle and the costs associated with each and the ability to report on that.

There is no communication gap between fleet management, maintenance management, and the drivers, which ensures the maintenance is not over looked and is done on time. If maintenance is missed, it is highlighted on the reports run and maintenance schedule.

How can fleet solutions help operators extend the life of their vehicles?

Ensuring all maintenance is completed on time to avoid engine blow outs or any other costly repairs caused by neglect.

Can fleet operators share vehicle maintenance data with third-party vehicle repair service providers?

Yes, they can set up an API to share data that would flow into the shop’s internal software with any repair service they wish or can simply send automated alerts to the maintenance provider’s e-mail to let them know that a vehicle is coming in soon for a repair.

How can these solutions benefit smaller fleet operators that may have fewer than 10 vehicles?

No matter how small the fleet is, they will benefit in the same way as a larger fleet from the technology. Although the savings wouldn’t be as big as it is for a large fleet, it still reduces the operating costs for the small fleet.
