Motorists that aren't battery care savvy may think the maintenance free label gives them the freedom to forget about the power source or some may choose to charge without understanding the charge state. Although batteries often encounter problems when they are undercharged, overcharging is one of the main reasons for a battery to lose water and this is especially an issue with maintenance free batteries.

Whist maintenance free batteries are very safe due to the electrolyte being sealed inside the casing, vehicle owners still must ensure the right amount of charge is given to the battery. They do not leak liquid or fumes but, for the motorist, a sealed battery means it cannot be filled up with more distilled water if the level is low. Although overcharging and the evaporation of water is more likely to occur in ambient temperatures above 25 degrees, it is a simple mistake for anyone to make.

However, a smart battery charger, such as CTEK's MXS 5.0, determines the condition of the battery and its exact charge before applying the required action. This leading 12V battery charger not only provides diagnosis and charge, it comprises a state-of-the-art maintenance charge and also restores stratified and deeply discharged batteries. CTEK smart battery chargers, therefore, help to protect against fluid loss, prolong the battery's life and maintain reliability.

Jan-Ulf Soderberg, head of brand and marketing at CTEK, says: "The complicated electronic systems that are used in modern cars require an almost constant electrical supply, which ultimately places a large strain on the battery. Therefore, simple checks and a battery maintenance routine can prevent an inconvenient failure, even on the so-called 'maintenance free' types. A charge should be undertaken only when necessary because overcharging can cause as many issues as undercharging. With battery related problems being cited as the number one reason for breakdown service call-outs, vehicle owners can also save themselves a hefty fee, or even the cost of a new battery."
