Aftermarket Business World columnist Larry Silvey says that properly trained auto technicians can provide a competitive advantage to independent shops and dealerships that are trying to boost their service repair business in his column, “Auto technician training is competitive edge.”
More and more vehicles are rolling off the production lines with high-tech systems such as parallel parking, lane departure warning, cross-traffic warning, back-up cameras, automatic high-beam control and multiple airbags. If that’s not enough, automatic braking is expected to become standard equipment in the not-too-distant future.
There’s no quicker way to lose the faith and good will of customers than to turn them away because you aren’t able to repair the high-tech gadgetry on their vehicles. Not making the proper repair should not be an option for a repair shop that wants to grow its business.
In addition to the shops, OEMs, distributors and retailers all recognize the importance of keeping their customers prepared to work on all vehicles. Some of them have exclusive training programs to help the shops train their technicians. He discusses those and speculates that more comprehensive training programs will be offered in the future.
