Bernie Thompsonshared techniques that technicians could immediately apply to customer concerns related to EVAP system leak Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), showing them how to verify that a leak was actually occurring and how big a leak it was before they even opened the hood or raised the vehicle on their lift.

Presenter Bernie Thompson is a perennial favorite among technicians and shop owners alike. A graduate of Lincoln Technical Center, Thompson has 30-odd years of automotive experience under his belt, including time as a multi-bay shop owner, mobile diagnostic technician, shop owner and tool developer. His firm, Automotive Test Solutions, has developed numerous innovative tools and diagnostic aids that have won several industry awards. When you listen to Thompson begin his instructional sessions, it doesn’t take long to realize that he is a man that knows his material inside and out. As one fan shared, “Bernie can tell you exactly what is happening in any automotive system, one nanosecond at a time!”

In this case, Automechanika Chicago attendees were listening to Thompson describe the operation and diagnosis of evaporative emissions (EVAP) systems. He shared techniques that technicians could immediately apply to customer concerns related to EVAP system leak Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), showing them how to verify that a leak was actually occurring and how big a leak it was before they even opened the hood or raised the vehicle on their lift.

The session began with an overview of the various EVAP systems in use by today’s popular car lines, with a focus on how they work and explained in a manner that made it all very clear to his listeners. Each system was followed up with testing methods, both as recommended by the OEM and more direct approaches Thompson has developed over his years of experience.

Thompson explained to his audience that making money, as a mobile tech or line tech, required one to be efficient in the use of their time. His material, backed by real world case studies, provided the information and resource knowledge needed to find the source of EVAP leaks quickly and accurately. And judging by the applause received at the end of his presentation, the attendees of “Advanced Techniques For Diagnosing EVAP Problems” were more than satisfied by this expert content.
