Ask the Expert: What is the recommendation for clutch maintenance?

Nov. 17, 2016
It varies by manufacturer, but traditionally, every 25,000 miles the clutch was inspected and the clutch release bearing was greased.

Q: What is the recommendation for clutch maintenance?

A: The OEMs and the clutch manufacturers have the final say, but traditionally, in an over the road application the clutch release bearing was required to be greased every 25,000 miles and a clutch adjustment inspection done at the same time. A clutch adjustment inspection, should not be a quick wiggle of the clutch pedal in the cab--proper inspection is getting under the truck and verifying the clutch release bearing distance is at least 1/2". Clutch manufacturers like Eaton have increased the recommended grease interval to 50,000 miles on over the road application/vocations on their Advantage Clutch products. The Advantage clutch holds more grease and has a seal to help keep contaminants out.
