Q: R-1234yf is the new refrigerant that has entered the U.S. market. What are some things technicians should be aware of?

A: The most recent statistics show that 18 U.S. vehicles are factory equipped with R-1234yf and 47 production lines. Ford and Chrysler vehicles lead the way, and right now only Cadillac vehicles from GM are equipped with the new refrigerant. Almost all Chrysler vehicles are factory filled with R-1234yf. The statistics also show that 33 European vehicles are already equipped with the new refrigerant and 83 in production lines. There are no Asian vehicles currently with R-1234yf, but Toyota has the equipment so it will be coming soon.

To prevent cross-contamination with different refrigerants, vehicles with R-1234yf have different service fittings. R-1234yf refrigerant is mildly flammable, so safety in handling is very important. In addition, technicians will note the procedure for servicing vehicles with R-1234yf is going to take longer than with R-134a vehicles. There are more leak and purity check capabilities built into our machines to comply with SAE standards.

Regardless of what machine you are using, SAE certified productivity ensures the machine will operate with specific equipment performance, purity and safety guidelines for the recovery and recycling of motor vehicle refrigerant. Refer to the SAE J2788 guideline for R134a refrigerant and the SAE J2843 guideline for R1234yf refrigerant before purchasing a manufacturer’s product.
