This bulletin applies to 2008-2009 Dodge Caliber models equipped with a 2.0L diesel engine and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). The customer may experience a MIL on with the vehicle remaining in “default” mode (limited rpm) after an engine start. Upon further investigation, the technician may find that P2002 (diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold) has been set.
This bulletin applies to 2008-2009 Dodge Caliber models equipped with a 2.0L diesel engine and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). The customer may experience a MIL on with the vehicle remaining in “default” mode (limited rpm) after an engine start. Upon further investigation, the technician may find that P2002 (diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold) has been set.
“Default” mode is used to protect the powertrain systems. This logic will remain in or revert to this mode if certain required operating parameters are not met in a specified time during engine start.
Using a scan tool (wiTECH or StarSCAN or StarMOBILE) with the appropriate diagnostic procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify that all engine systems are functioning as designed. If other DTCs are present, record and repair as needed before proceeding further. If no other DTCs are present, it will be necessary to use a scan tool and perform a stationary DPF regeneration. This will correct the condition.
This condition often happens because the DPF is at the 75% soot load level and a successful regeneration has not taken place due to a very low-load driving for a long period.
Inform the customer that in order to avoid this issue in the future, they will need to perform the following drive cycle every 372 miles or so:
Ensure that the engine is warm, with the vehicle running for five minutes.
Drive the vehicle for 30 minutes in 4th or 5th gear at a speed of 37 mph or above with the engine rpm greater than 2,000 rpm.
