Our Latest Winner!

Jan. 31, 2020

Congratulations to Joe Ruggiero of Joe’s Autoelectric in Port Richey, Florida!

Joe took our January ASE Question of the Month "test" and then elected, as you can, to enter our random prize drawing, hosted by our longtime sponsor, Federated Auto Parts!

In case you missed it, the question was tied to our January Hybrid and EV theme. Is your shop taking on hybrid repair or service? Even if you don't involve yourself in the repair and diagnosis of the HV (High Voltage) systems on the vehicle, there are still plenty of service opportunities you can tackle.

Let's see if you're ready for 'em!
Technician A is performing an air conditioning compressor replacement on a late model hybrid. The compressor is driven electrically by the HV battery, via a built-in inverter that converts the DC battery voltage to AC that can be used to spin the compressor.
Which of the following statements regarding this service is FALSE?
A.  Technician A needs to isolate the HV battery from the electrical system prior to removal of the old compressor.
B.  PAG oil can be used to lubricate the new compressor.
C.  Technician A should be sure to identify any ADAS systems that may require calibration after his repair is completed.
D.  Technician A needs to wear Personal Protective Equipment when isolating the HV system and use only tools that are certified for use on HV systems.
You’re correct if you answered B!
HV (High Voltage) A/C compressors require a special lubricating oil - POE. POE is not conductive while PAG oil is. In fact, even a very small amount of PAG oil, introduced into the system inadvertently, can result in HV Isolation DTCs and HV system shutdown!
February's focus is on electrical troubleshooting. One key to successfully diagnosing an electrical fault is being secure in your knowledge of fundamental electrical principles.
Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?
A.  All electrical circuits are made up of a load, a source, a control, a circuit protection device and a path that connects them all together.
B.  Ohms Law teaches the relationship between voltage, resistance and wattage.
C.  If voltage is reduced, current flow is also reduced.
D.  Voltage is the measure of electromotive potential between any two points in a circuit.
Click HERE to take this month's question and be sure to enter your name, whether you got it right or not, to be included in our next drawing!
