More specifically, the report states that safety changes on vehicles from 2000 to 2008 caused a dramatic reduction in the number of crashes and casualties on the road, with an estimated 2,000 lives saved and 1 million prevented-occupant injuries in 2008 alone.

According to the report, there is now an 82 percent chance of someone escaping a crash uninjured, up from a 79 percent chance in 2000, and that the likelihood of crashing in 100,000 miles of driving has gone from a 30 percent chance in a model-year 2000 vehicle to a 25 percent chance in a model-year 2008 one. NHTSA says it has seen an overall decline in traffic fatalities in the past decade, falling to 32,885 in 2010.
