WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Automotive Service Association (ASA) opposes legislation introduced by Missouri state Sen. Charlie Shields (R-District 34), S. 17, to abolish the state's motor vehicle safety inspection program. The legislation would exempt the St. Louis metropolitan area and school buses, and if passed, repeal of the state safety inspection would become effective Jan. 1, 2008.

In the previous Congress, Sen. David G. Klindt (R-District 12) offered an amendment to state Sen. John E. Greisheimer's (R-District 26) legislation, S. 583, which would have repealed all safety inspections for vehicles in Missouri. Although Greisheimer's legislation passed, Klindt's amendment was not included.

ASA asks Missouri independent repairers to contact their legislators expressing opposition to the legislation. To send a letter in opposition to the safety inspection repeal legislation and to view the full text of Mo. S. 17, visit ASA's legislative Web site, www.TakingTheHill.com.
