Customization craze continues

From speed to sound, vehicle customization is growing.

From speed to sound, vehicle customization is growing.

Traditional retailers are selling more specialty parts, and shop owners are installing them in their bays. Carmakers are jumping on the personalization bandwagon too, as demonstrated by Scion, a division of Toyota Motor Sales, which recently launched Optomize, an aftermarket accessory program for the Scion. Optomize will let customers personalize their vehicles at the time of purchase with over 150 name brand accessories.

Due to the revenue potential, research suggests that many vehicle dealerships are beginning to offer customers ways to accessorize their cars, featuring both OE and aftermarket parts and accessories. For example, Galpin Motors, a Los Angeles-based dealership that sells Fords, Saturns, Volvos and more, has created Galpin Auto Sports (G.A.S.) — an all-inclusive design facility for customizing all vehicle makes and models, according to Beau Boeckmann, VP of Galpin Motors, Inc.

G.A.S. uses performance parts and accessories, including aftermarket products, ordering direct from manufacturers and local distributors to fulfill their needs.

Everything from one-of-a-kind interiors, paint and body modifications and performance upgrades are available. The G.A.S. Center features a paint and design studio where custom paint schemes and color combinations are available.

An in-car entertainment showroom provides touch screens for customers to sample speakers, amps, head units and subwoofers, giving them a chance to experience an individualized sound system.

Additional personalization items for enthusiasts who wish to make enhancements to their new or used vehicle at Galpin include:

  • High-performance engine options, ranging from 500 horsepower Ford Racing crate engines to Roush engines. Special exhaust systems, headers and turbochargers are also available.
  • A 100-foot custom wheel wall display featuring 200 separate wheel designs in the G.A.S. retail area. Over 50 gearshift knob options are also showcased.
  • Customizable interior and exterior components and accessories.
