Matco Tools distributor Dean Ulsh sells a number of toolboxes per year, but doesn’t push them too much. “I always look at a box sale as a bonus.”
Ulsh had a day right before the Matco Tools Tool Expo last year where he sold three toolboxes to one shop.
“I had a maroon triple bay 4S on my truck,” says Ulsh. “This guy came up and talked to me – I never thought I would’ve sold (to him), and I said ‘you’re tall, this has a top drawer, this will fit you better.’”
“He made me a deal, and I said ‘Okay, I’ll drop it off Thursday morning.’”
When Ulsh dropped off the maroon box that morning, he also had a yellow triple bay on the truck. A customer came on the truck and made an offer for the second box. “So I load that off.”
The third box on the truck, a green 4225RP (rollaway power toolbox) , also was purchased by a technician that same morning.
“When you sell a toolbox or two, you’re thinking ‘Man, I just sold that.’ Then you’re trying to think of who else can you sell a toolbox too next, because you did that big sale,” says Ulsh.
“It’s amazing, they come out of the woodwork sometimes when you’re not expecting it. You get so many surprise sales out of these business.”
