In Focus: OTC Drain Plug PRO Kit

Sept. 7, 2014
The OTC Drain Plug PRO Kit, No. 5961, prevents spillage of oil on a shop floor or hands when performing oil changes, and it prevents the loss of a drain plug or other fastener when removing from tight spaces.

The OTC Drain Plug PRO Kit, No. 5961, eliminates the issue of dropped drain plugs with a magnetic head, several adapters for common makes/models usage and a flexible cable allowing the drain plug to fall away from the oil stream, reducing splashing. The kit builds on an original, patented innovation by broadening the application to all automotive drain plug designs. The tool’s strong magnetic head keeps the drain plug with the tool, avoiding lost, dirty and dropped drain plugs. The expanded kit includes attachments for standard and low-profile, internal hex (17mm) and 1/4" hex drain plugs. The flexible shank with 1/4" square drive helps remove or thread smaller fasteners, and can be used with all 1/4" square drive sockets.

Features and benefits

The OTC Drain Plug PRO Kit's strong magnetic head prevents losing drain plugs or other fasteners, eliminating time spent searching for dropped materials. The product also reduces spillage of hot oil on hands or a shop floor, eliminating potential slip or burn hazard. Invented for oil changes, the second generation kit features a ¼” square drive head to accommodate all ¼” drive sockets for increased versatility.

Application

Originally geared for oil changes to prevent lost drain plugs and spilled oil, the tool has become more versatile in its second generation. A ¼” square drive fits sockets for nearly unlimited applications for removing fasteners in hard to reach places.

Origin

The product was created from a need to reduce oil spillage and lost drain plugs. It evolved into a ¼” square drive on a flexible cable that meets its original intention while expanding applications.

Manufacturing/engineering specifications.

The product is made from plastic and coiled metal cable for durability and flexibility. It is lighter than a screwdriver.

Storage and display

Ten units ship in a box, with the kit neatly packed into a common socket rail, ¼” drive included. The socket rail can be hung from a nail in the shop or pegboard. This product is sold individually to the end user, not as a pack of 10.

 Testimonials

From Amazon...

  • I used the Drain Plug Pro last time i changed the oil in my car. I am normal guy and changing my oil is about the only true maintenance i can do on a modern car. The Drain Plug Pro make that job easier. The magnet holds the drain plug securely but does not have too much pull so the plug is still easily removed from the drain pan. I find it helpful to get the plug started with a ratchet and then use this tool to finish it off. As the last threads let go, the oil starts to drain and the drain plug remains attached to the Drain Plug Pro. A great addition for anyone who changes their own oil and a must have if you do this more than once every few months.
  • I usually don't buy gadgets like this, but I decided to try this tool after watching an ETCG video. In the past, I've pressed the drain plug against the threads to keep the oil from leaking while removing the drain plug. However, the drain plug on my current car is in a relatively tight spot, and I've either dropped the drain plug into the pan and/or make a mess on the splashshield. I tried this tool several days ago, and it works as it should: the oil went into the pan, and the drain plug stuck to the tool. It wasn't a mind-blowing, life-altering, cathartic moment that leads to nirvana or anything.
  • Miscellaneous thoughts:
    • The bolt needs to be broken free with a socket or wrench first.
    • The flexible shaft can be bent 180 degrees and the tool rotates freely.
    • It may be useful for removing fastners in tight spots.
    • The spoofs in the promotional video were entertaining.
  •  This is one of those cool little things you wish you could have invented yourself. It works like a champ and no more burnt hands!!!
