Ten storage tips

Dec. 2, 2016
Recommendations for all battery types.

The following battery storage guidelines apply to all battery types.

1. Store new batteries in original packaging. This helps to identify damage such as swelling or leakage of batteries.

Swelling indicates a battery that has vented.

2. Do not mix new and used batteries because it is difficult to distinguish between them.

3. Do not accumulate used batteries, dispose of them on a regular basis.

4. Segregate battery storage from other hazardous materials and from other battery chemistries.

5. Protect batteries from crushing, punctures and shorting.

6. Keep batteries in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Recommend keeping temperature is below 120 degrees F.

7. Coordinate battery storage locations with the local fire department/safety office, and have periodic inspections conducted by them.

8. Protect bulk storage batteries areas with sprinklers.

9. No smoking or eating in battery storage locations.

10. Ensure that appropriate fire extinguishers are available.
