Changan Mazda, the Chinese joint venture between the Japanese automaker Mazda Motor and China's Chongqing Changan Automobile, sold 6,965 cars in September, the single-month peak since its inception.

From January to September 2009, sales at the joint venture reached 48,042 units, an increase of 47 percent over the same period last year. For the nine months, 33,890 Mazdas were sold, a year-on-year growth of 22 percent.

"We will surely achieve this year's sales goal of 60,000 cars." says An Xianling, executive deputy general manager of Changan Mazda. However, market demand behooves the Chinese venture to expand its capacity.

That is especially true for the best-selling Mazda3, for which customers who have booked the model have had to wait up to two months for delivery. Currently, both the Mazda3 and Focus models are being produced in one Chongqing plant running at full capacity. An Xianling also indicated that the capacity should be adjusted hand in hand with demand, but in fact, the company has not made a definite plan for capacity expansion.

In January 2008, Changan Mazda' dealership network counted 52 dealers, and the figure has risen to 108 as of September 2009. By the end of this year, there will be more than 110 Changan Mazda dealers in major cities nationwide, according to Zhu Zhenju, marketing director at Changan Mazda.

Changan Mazda will add the new imported Mazda3 Hatchback to its product line next year however the new model will not be produced in China in the near term.
