Tool Review: Redline Detection ReadySmoke

June 15, 2018
There is zero lag time with instant smoke buildup, according to the reviewer.

The ReadySmoke Smoke Machine by Redline Detection allows technicians to detect, locate and repair leaks in any sealed system. ReadySmoke is designed to pinpoint intake and EVAP leaks in minutes, the company says, saving time searching for cracked or worn components. ReadySmoke comes with a full accessory kit that includes Redline's vapor producing fluid, which is designed to last hundreds of tests and is free of dyes and other contaminants. The easy fill, dipstick style fluid port on the top of the machine gives quick access, and the machine features a detachable smoke hose. ReadySmoke is designed to be low-cost and portable, and is sized to fit in a toolbox drawer. This product is made in the USA.

The Review

When it comes to pinpointing a cracked or worn component with a smoke machine, instant smoke buildup is a huge plus. Steve Rorick, a technician with 20 years of experience under his belt, says the ReadySmoke from Redline Detection has “zero lag time” when it comes to that process.

The Newport Beach, California, technician says setup is easy, too. Simply turn on the equipment, add oil, supply 12 volts of power, adjust the gauge to desired measurements, and “Bam! Ready to operate,” Rorick says.

Based on the simplicity of the equipment, he adds that there’s hardly even need for a manual.

All necessary adapters needed to test current and past EVAP and emissions systems are included with the machine, and, while that is what the tool was originally designed for, Rorick also used the product quite frequently for intake leaks, catalytic converters and exhaust leaks.

While Rorick of MB Elite said he loves the compact size, stability and quality of the machine, he says there’s always a trade-off with smaller size.

“The on-board air feature was great, but [it] makes the equipment bulky,” he explains. “This equipment is more convenient for high usage. It’s an extremely valuable tool.”

Overall, Rorick says he is a huge fan of Redline products, and this machine is no exception.

“[I] enjoy the dip stick, compact size, length of the cables and the hose,” he says. “Overall it fits and exceeds our needs.”
