Ask the Expert: What is the difference between an impact air ratchet and a conventional air ratchet?

May 7, 2020
The impact air ratchet has an impacting mechanism that can help prevent injury on the job.

Question: What is the difference between an impact air ratchet and a conventional air ratchet?
Answer:

Conventional air ratchets usually deliver 20-25 ft-lbs of torque and 200-250 rpm. They will also install or remove one 3” lag bolt in 9 seconds. When technicians are installing a bolt, as they get to the bottom, the conventional air ratchet will jerk their hand and arm, potentially causing the conventional air ratchet to mash their fingers against other metal in tight areas.

Impact air ratchets, on the hand, can deliver up to 55 ft-lbs of torque and 600-700 rpm and will remove or install three to four 3” lag bolts in 9 seconds. The impact ratchet has an impacting mechanism, much like an impact wrench, that will provide high torque, high speed, and is reaction free. When technicians are installing bolts, as they reach the bottom, the impact ratchet does not jerk their hand or arm, so there is no risk of injury.
