VSP News: Kolman's Korner, Episode 26

Fleet Maintenance editor David A. Kolman visits with Scott Miller, director of refining for Safety-Kleen’s East Chicago, Indiana, refinery - the largest oil re-refinery in North America. They talk about the misconceptions surrounding re-refined motor oils and lubes, and discuss how today’s re-refining processes are considerably different then when re-refining first began during World War II when everything was in short supply.

At that time, motor oil was basically just strained and re-used. This didn’t make for a high quality oil, and it got a very bad reputation.

Miller and Kolman about environmentally-friendly aspects of the re-refined oils program, including  conserving resources and reducing emissions.

There is also a video that provides some insight into how the re-refining process works.
