Tech Tip: How to properly store grease cartridges to reduce the chances of your grease gun getting air bound

Recommended grease cartridge storage is upright standing on the aluminum tab end.

Recommended grease cartridge storage is upright standing on the aluminum tab end. This is important so that the grease will remain in contact with that end. At times, individuals will store cartridges on their side, which can be problematic depending on grease formula and temperature, as the grease can shift and settle away from the aluminum tab end. When this happens, an air pocket can develop. When you load the cartridge into the gun and allow the plunger to advance forward, you will push a pocket of air towards the aluminum tab end. This can be an issue if your grease gun does not have an air bleed valve. If it does, push the button and allow the plunger to push the air out. If it doesn’t, your grease gun may not push the air out through the hose or rigid extension. In order to reduce the chances of your grease gun getting air bound, make sure you store your grease cartridges upright on the aluminum tab end.
