American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council honored several members with a variety of awards for their important service to the council and the industry.

These awards included:

  • Fred Trammel, shop manager, Transport America, Atlanta, who was honored with the Excellence in Maintenance Supervision Award
  • Gary Yurko, manager for engineering standards, TE Connectivity, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Brian Mandt, engineering manager, Donaldson Co., Bloomington, Minn., who were honored as Recognized Associates
  • Anita Byrne, national sales manager, Mobile InnerSpace, Wapakoneta, Ohio, who was honored with the Study Group Secretary Award.

“TMC represents the best in technical excellence in the trucking industry,” said Carl Kirk, ATA vice president of maintenance, information technology & logistics and TMC executive director, “and these individuals represent the best in their fields. We’re pleased to honor them here and recognize them for their contribution to this council and the industry.”

The Excellence in Maintenance Supervision Award honors a front line supervisor for excellent performance in maintenance supervision. Following more than 15 years in multiple leadership positions maintaining all types of military equipment, Trammel held positions from technician to shop manager at Transport America.

“Fred has displayed an ability to solve problems, think, reason and learn while using the latest technologies to improve maintenance operations and overcome problems encountered within his shop,” said Art Ponds, regional maintenance manager for Transport America. “Fred is dedicated to ensuring that his shop meets the customer expectation of repairs made and that his shop performance is nothing less than outstanding.”

Over the last year, Trammel’s shop was responsible for completing 9,585 repairs, totaling almost $2.7 million to company units while recovering approximately $300,000 in warranty repair claims.

The Recognized Associates award honors individuals to have made outstanding contributions to the improvement of equipment, its maintenance and support of TMC activities.

Yurko, a TMC member since 2000, has served on the Meeting Mechanic and Sergeant-at-Arms committees. He has been active within the S.1 Electrical & Instruments Study Group, serving on several task forces. He also has served as a panelist for several technical sessions.

Mandt, a TMC member since 2008, serves as the study group secretary and task force chairman for the S.3 Engine Study Group. He continues to contribute preparation for technical sessions, including a fleet fuel survey in advance of the 2015 Fall Meeting. He received the Study Group Secretary Award in 2012 for his outstanding contributions to the Future Truck Committee, and provides assistance to TMC’s Sergeant-at-Arms and Meeting Mechanics groups.

Byrne, a TMC member since 2009, has contributed to the recommended practice development process and assisted in organizing technical sessions as secretary of the Corrosion Control Action Committee in addition to providing a record of task force and study group activity for the council’s technical journal, The Trailblazer.
