New Oregon legislation calls for a 10-percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels over the next decade.
According to a Jan. 7 Oregon Public Broadcasting article, the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission voted 4-1 Wednesday to pass rules requiring companies that import fuel into Oregon to reduce the carbon intensity of the their fuel mix by substituting alternative fuels for gasoline or diesel.
Similar legislation is in place in California and British Columbia, and it allows Oregon to suspend the new fuel plan is there is not enough clean fuel (biofuel, natural gas, propane or electricity) to meet the standard, or if the program causes significant fuel price increases.
According to the Oregon Public Broadcasting article, all five commissioners that voted on the legislation “expressed concern about the potential for negative economic impacts, but most agreed that they support the goal of carbon reduction.”
