BMW begins production on plug-in electric car using carbon-reinforced plastic

BMW calls i3 the first electric car built from the ground up.

Production has begun on the 2014 BMW i3 plug-in electric car, which the company claims is the first premium vehicle designed from the ground up as an electric car, featuring a carbon-reinforced plastic passenger cell and a separate aluminum chassis for the powertrain suspension, according to Green Car Reports.
