Three people riding in a pickup truck drove head-on into an 18-wheeler in N.M.

Three people riding in a pickup truck were killed Tuesday night when their vehicle crossed an Interstate 25 median near Bernalillo and collided with an 18-wheel semi-truck, State Police said.

The crash, which left debris strewn across a stretch of interstate, caused the closure of northbound I-25 between Bernalillo and Algodones after it occurred at about 7:15 p.m. Authorities said they expected to have the highway reopened by rush hour this morning.

Police said they did not know why the pickup crossed the median.

Keith Reynolds, the driver of the semi-truck, was not injured, said a lawyer for Knight Trucking Co., which owned the vehicle. Police said the semi was hauling gravel.

The attorney did not know where Reynolds was from or where he was headed. He said Reynolds and his dog would be taken to a local hotel.

The pickup, which had been turned into a heap of twisted metal, appeared to be hauling furniture and other large items.
