SureTrack Real Fix: Module Submission

Jan. 14, 2015
This tech used the Mitchell 1 SureTrack to correct a stalling engine on a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 HD.

Similar to mixed martial arts, repairing a vehicle can be a physically demanding task. It is a constant battle between the tech and the components (s)he is diagnosing. Be prepared when a stalling diesel issues a challenge. Train with this Real Fix and make that faulty diesel fuel injection control module tap out.

Title
Engine Stalls, Replaced Diesel Fuel Injection Control Module

Complaint
The customer states the vehicle engine stalls.

Cause
The tech confirmed the customer’s complaint, performed a road test and found the engine randomly stalled. He then ran the engine in the service bay until the engine stalled and used a scan tool to view the fuel rail pressure sensor parameter while cranking the engine and found the parameter was within specifications. To test for voltage, the tech used a multi-meter and pulsed ground at a fuel injector while cranking the engine. He observed voltage was not present at the fuel injector. Next, he used the multi-meter to test for voltage and ground at the diesel fuel injection control module and found both were present. Then, he cranked the engine until the vehicle started and allowed the engine to idle, tapped on the diesel fuel injection control module and found the vehicle stalled, which confirmed the diesel fuel injection control module was faulty.

Correction
Once the tech replaced the diesel fuel injection control module and verified the vehicle performed properly, the customer’s concern did not return.
