Ask the Expert: How do I deal with water coming from my air tools?

March 5, 2015
What you need is a water trap at your work station.

Q: We are getting a lot of water coming from our air tools. How do we stop this problem?

A: The water is coming from the compressor. A working compressor in California will make two-plus gallons of water a day and in Florida in the summer could make up to five gallons a day. The compressor takes the water from the air and condenses it and passes it along the pipe to your air hose and the air cools as it travels letting the water drop out of it. What you need is a water trap at your work station. Some guys put the water trap at the air compressor. This doesn’t work, because the air is too warm at this point to allow the water to drop out of it. You must be a minimum of 25' from the air compressor to get any water out of it.
