Tool review: Kafko Oil Eater product line

Reviewer finds products helped to keep his shop cleaner.

Lou Fort, lead technician at K.A.R.S. Inc. in Huntingburg, IN, received a variety of Kafko Oil Eater products for testing, including: Fleet Wash, Floor Cleaner, Cleaner and Degreaser, Orange Cleaner, “Naturals” Absorbents absorbent matting, Rain Away and No Fog.

Of all the products Fort received, he liked the Floor Cleaner packets the best.

"The one product I loved using, and hope our shop adopts, has to be the Floor Cleaner in the 1.5-ounce portion packs," says Fort. "Those little packs eliminate the need for keeping a measuring device (which never seems to stay put) out of a bulk container, which stops a messy waste of chemicals, and makes keeping a ‘fresh-n-ready’ mop bucket easy."

Regarding the portion packs, Fort explained that it can sometimes be difficult to keep shops clean, but the Kafko products helped to more easily clean up the shop.

"Our mop bucket saw more use, having the (Oil Eater) Floor Cleaner in it, in the past few weeks than it had seen in months. Usually using the mop just spreads out an oil spot, making a bigger mess, "says Fort. "But with the floor cleaner (from the packet) added to the mop bucket, it actually picked up the oil, coolant, grease and brake fluid, leaving a nice, clean, non-slippery floor behind."

Fort also found the packaging for some of the products very intuitive.

"(The) labels were easy to read and understand," says Fort. "The Cleaner/Degreaser spray bottle label has a nice feature where you can quickly make a box to indicate the concentration that was last used when filling it."

When asked what Fort liked about the Kafko Oil Eater products, he responded, "They actually work."

"I have used lots of different companies cleaning products over my many years. Some fell short of what they claimed it would do," says Fort. "All of the Kafko products I used performed better than any other brand I can remember."

He continues, "The Cleaner/Degreaser didn’t have any offensive odor like many others do, and the Orange Cleaner scent is actually a little refreshing."

Fort goes on to explain the performance of the different products he tested out:

"The Cleaner/Degreaser was mostly used for spot clean-ups, it quickly became obvious we needed to do all of the shop floor with this product. Both the Degreaser and Orange Cleaner did a great job of washing the ‘blue goo’ off tire sidewalls. The Orange Cleaner also did a nice job of sprucing up my toolbox without streaking or any noticeable residue. The Fleet Wash did a great job on the vehicles without any ill effects."

"The “Naturals” (absorbent mats) were put to use keeping injectors clean and protected while keeping both the oil and fuel contained. I was also able to skim the oil off the top of a drain pan full of fresh coolant that was accidentally contaminated with transmission fluid using one of the oil-only pads. "

Fort added one improvement suggestion to the Kafko line of products: "It would be nice to have some kind of included measuring component added to the containers," he says. "For some reason, finding our measuring cup can take longer than the actual clean-up."

Fort also appreciated the company’s commitment to environmental safety.

"I like that Kafko is committed to producing biodegradable, non-toxic and non-corrosive products that, some having ‘zero-VOC’, will actually clean almost any mess we can make."

Overall, Fort gave the Kafko Oil Eater line of products a ten out of ten. "Not only because they actually do a fantastic job, but (the products) are also earth-friendly."
