Tool Review: Mayhew Tools 6-pc Non-Turning Pneumatic Tool Set

Feb. 13, 2020
“These tools are a unique new approach to an age-old tool,” the reviewer says.

Reviewer Randy Kaiser of Rost Motor, Inc. in Manson, Iowa, has been using air hammer chisels and cutters for years, but the Mayhew 6-pc Non-Turning Pneumatic Tool Set, No. 32200 “is the first [set] designed not to turn when using them,” he says.

For Kaiser, the non-turning design feature of the tool set saved him time on jobs because, as he put it, “The chisels and cutters stay lined up with what you are trying to cut, instead of turning and cutting into the wrong area.”

According to Rost Motor’s technician, no setup is required for these tools. In order to use them, a technician just needs to insert whichever non-turning pneumatic tool they desire onto their air hammer and they’re good to go.

When the Mayhew tool set arrived, Kaiser says it was packaged in a heavy-duty roll pouch. In the pouch, each tool has its own slot to keep them all organized and separated, but together in one place. Additionally, when the tools are not in use, the pouch can be rolled up and held shut with the Velcro strip.

The non-turning pneumatic tools were put to good use cutting off rusted bolts and removing bushings. While using the tools, Kaiser notes they appear to be well made and very durable.

In Kaiser’s opinion, the best feature of this tool set is the one unique to it – its non-turning design.

“These tools are a unique new approach to an age-old tool,” he says. “When using a straight hammer bit or punch bit, it doesn’t matter if it turns. If you’re trying to chisel off a bolt, cut out a bushing, or cut a straight line in a panel, it makes all the difference in the world. It can make the difference between a successful job or an expensive part that’s ruined.”

Other features Kaiser appreciated were the black oxide coating on each tool for rust resistance and the tools’ lifetime warranty guarantee.

In the future, Kaiser hopes the kit will also include non-turning exhaust cutters, as these tools can also cause problems if they turn and cut into the wrong area.

“All in all,” Kaiser says, “it’s a nice set and a welcome addition to most every toolbox.”
